  •  Pulled pork burger and salted caramel milkshake, number 27 on the Top 100 Sydney dishes to die for list, The Sunday Telegraph Dec 14.

Today the 100 Sydney dishes to die for list lead me to Chur Burger in Surry Hills to try their pulled pork burger and salted caramel shake..

Located on the corner of Albion and Mary Street, Surry Hills you will find Chur Burger. Like most of the eateries on the list it was busy. After a five minute wait which gave us some time to look at and discuss the menu, we headed inside and order the below items:

Salted caramel milkshake
Strawberry milkshake
Pulled pork burger
Grilled lamb burger
Grilled beef burger
BBQ chicken wings with blue cheese sauce
Sweet potato fries
Deep fried pickles with jalepeno mayo
Iceberg with a buttermilk dressing and dill

Arriving in a traditional silver cup with a frothy milky top and swirl of caramel, the salted caramel milkshake didn't disappoint. Sweet but not too sweet it was a little thicker and creamier than a regular milkshake.

The pulled pork burger was just as good, full of pork, red slaw and a decent dollop of fennel mayo it was well worth $10, just like any good burger it was a tad messy as the juice from the pulled pork dripped from the back of the burger.

Another messy but delicious dish was the BBQ chicken wings, listed on the specials menu these sticky wings which had been marinated in BBQ sauce were juicy and tender. To add to the sweet BBQ sauce was a side of blue cheese sauce, yum!

Chur Burger I'm not surprised you made the on the list.

The Veggie Patch food truck

Yesterday's lunch was a tad exciting. Deviating from my usual Vietnamese roll I chose to check out the lone food truck sitting outside Parramatta town hall. 

Deciding on the zucchini and feta fritter I certainly wasn't disappointed. 

Inside my square cardboard box on a bed of greens and beetroot slaw sat the fritter, to its side were a number of crunchy sweet potato chips, slightly curled they perfectly scooped up the caramalised onion.

It was a tasty meat free lunch, that kept me satisfied!

My attempt at Donna Hay's ice cream lamington bars

Since seeing Donna Hay's ice cream lamington bars on Instagram I haven't been able to get them off my mind.

So to get into the spirit of Australia Day, I found the recipe, bought the ingredients and followed the steps to make these yummy bars.

As simple as the bars look they weren't so quick or easy to make. To start today's hot weather wasn't ideal for working with ice cream. My impatience was another problem, not allowing the ice cream to set for the recommend time, my bars were uneven and slightly melted.   

Another boo boo was dipping the bars into melted chocolate which hadn't completely cooled. This changed the constistency of the chocolate so much so that by time it came to bar number seven the chocolate was no longer sticking to the bars. 

On the positive side despite the lamington bars not having the neat uniform look that only Donna Hay can achieve, they didn't taste so bad, on first bite I was met with a crunch of thick dark chocolate followed by a mouthful of soft ice cream and shredded coconut.

If you are up for the challenge  I hope you have more patience than me and allow your ice cream to set and chocolate to cool.

Festival Village, Sydney Hyde Park

The Festival Village is back. Running from January 8 to 25 you will find this annual event in Sydney's Hyde Park.

With food stalls, licensed bars, a lawn library, music and entertainment it's the perfect place to visit if your looking for a laid back venue featuring some good eats.

I spent most of my time at the festival visiting The double down diner. From the Porteno's side of the diner I sampled the grilled chilli dog, smoked wagyu Philly cheese steak sandwich and southern fried chicken and waffles. Out of the three dishes the fried chicken and waffles were the clear winner, the chicken was perfectly crisp on the outside and succulent and moist on the inside. Combined with a little bit of bacon and maple soaked waffle it was the perfect marriage. I can't wait to try this dish again!

On the other side of the diner was Messina's. From the menu I ordered the nutty piefessor gelato pie. With a peanut butter biscuit base, peanut custard, vanilla gelato layer, more peanuts and cream topping all I can say is I'm glad I did a workout earlier in the day!

To wash down the diner inspired dishes a large chocolate milkshake from Sherri and Candys milkbar worked well.

Shopping, Bangin' Burritos and an attempted swim

Happy long weekend to all my Aussie viewers! Today I spent my day on the Central Coast.

Starting with some shopping at Erina Fair I bought a couple of dressy shorts and a jumpsuit.

We than headed to Terrigal for lunch. Feeling like Mexican we ordered a burrito, nacho's and beer from Bangin' Burritos located along the esplanade.

By this stage Gabby had enough of sitting so we headed to the non wavy part of the beach which we thought would be great. Clearly we were wrong, as she felt the sand on her feet we were meet by a blubbery cry. Her reaction to the water was just as bad, with several sympathetic looks from other parents I quickly took her out of the water and tried to calm her down.

What happened to my little girl who use to love the sand and water.......

Wildpear Cafe, Dural

Yesterday morning the girls and I had breakfast at Wildpear Cafe in Dural. Popular the cafe was busy when we arrived at a very early eight am. Our orders consisted of two serves of sweet pea falafel with haloumi, avocado and poached egg, Spanish eggs with toast and toast with butter and jam for my little girl. Our meals delicious and fresh as they looked left us leaving quite satisfied. Sitting outside we had a beautiful view of the nursery and the surrounding bushland. If you are ever in the area check it out.

Roti Canai at Mamak, Haymarket

Still committed to the top 100 Sydney dishes challenge today I tried number two on the list, the Roti Canai from Mamak in Haymarket.

Arriving just before midday the restaurant was almost full. Seated immediately it didn't take long to place and receive our order of Roti Canai, half dozen chicken satay sticks, Kari Ikan (fish curry) and Nasi Lemak with fried chicken.

The Roti Canai ($5.50) just as described on the menu was crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It was served with two curry dips and sambal sauce. Delicious the only regret was not ordering another serve.

The Kari Ikan ($17) a fish curry also worth a mention was great. With a decent sized piece of fish, okra, fresh tomatoes and eggplant this curry was full of flavour.

Adding to our order two glasses of Teh tarik, a classic Malaysian sweetened tea, one glass of Teh 'O' ais limau, ice tea with lime and leaving with change from $60 we didn't just leave saying wow to the food!

The Tea Room, Sydney

After months of uttering the words 'we have to go to high tea' too many times to count a group of friends and I finally bit the bullet agreed on a date and made a reservation at The Tea Room.
Located in what was the original grand ballroom of the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney's CBD it's hard not to feel a little fancy as you sip a cup of tea and nibble on a scone with jam and clotted cream in this grand room now know as The Tea Room.

Arriving on time on a rainy Sunday afternoon I was pleased to see my friends already seated. After a look at the menu which includes morning tea, afternoon tea and an oriental tea we all decided on the sparkling afternoon tea.

Priced at $50 the sparkling afternoon tea includes finger sandwiches, sweet and savory pastries, scones with jam and clotted cream, petit fours, tea or coffee and a glass of sparkling wine.

Distracted by general chitter chatter as we caught up we took our time to select our teas. Being a lover of tea served black I settled on the vanilla tea. With a hint of vanilla it was slightly sweet which perfectly accompanied the scones.

After a short wait our afternoon tea arrived. Arriving on three tiers and a single plate we quickly dug into the sandwiches and savory pastries.

The sandwiches were filled with smoked salmon and prawns, given not everybody likes seafood I was surprised by these choices, nonetheless I ate more than my share.

On the same tier sat a tart with a detached lid. With a deliciously creamy filling the tart was one of my favourites of the day.

The scones some containing sultanas were perfectly sized, leaving just enough room for the petit fours.

Spread over two tiers the petit fours were made up of a fruit tart, chocolate mousse slice, lime macaroon and mango topped slice. The clear winner by all was the macaroon, crisp and refreshing it was a shame we didn't leave it to last, unfortunately the same could not be said about the mango topped slice as it sat on our plates barely touched.

With a little time left before our two hour window ended and too full to move we remained seated. By this stage I was regretting wearing my cute Alannah Hill bowed belt already on it's last notch. Contemplating taking it off, I quickly reminded myself where I was and left it on as I tried  adjusting it the best I could.
